After many months of preparation the day had finally arrived to take Hulda out to be painted. I hadn't slept well for a couple of days in anticipation of the event, especially worrying over last minute surface blemishes. Jay from LDI was kind enough to bring by his trailer so Hulda could be transported stripped down and ready to paint. Here's Julia wishing her well.
While we had hoped to rent a spray booth, it ended up not being available on the weekend we needed it, but Jay's friend Josh of JCA Customs let us mask off a couple of his bays over the weekend for our displaced project. We began by removing the wheels, engine cover and trunk lid, followed by masking. Here's Josh in his shop checking out the masked bug (if you need custom work in Sumner, especially if you are looking to slam your pickup or need an airbrushed skull, Josh is your man, JCACustoms@yahoo.com)
Here's Jay drying off the surface of the trunk lid after we degreased the surface. Next, its time to mix up the paint (nice moon suit, Jay!).
Pictured below is yours-truly mugging for a shot in my get up. I helped to lay down some of the sealer, but I let Jay take the gun when it got to the critical areas. Here he is masking off the side of the car in preparation of our two tone layout.
The Auto Air paint we chose works well for small areas, like air-brushing jobs, but has its challenges for full coverage. Below, Jay waits patiently for the pearl white to dry. The Rockstar red soaked up more than we anticipated, and we ran out of it before we were done! Fortuneatley, Jay was able to secure a perfect VW/Audi red called, Brilliantrot. Here he is laying it on.
After an intense weekend, Jay brings it home, and Hulda and her owners are very happy.
