Floor Pan Plans

12.10.2008
Now that we're getting going on the Hulda Project, one of the first things I've been wanting to get to was the rusty floor pans.  At first I tried simply wire brushing the surface and treating with a rust converter (Rust Doctor), but the rust seemed to run too deep for that to be effective.

So it was out with the grinder and take it down to bare metal (should have done this in the first place).  Nice and shiny!

After the grinding, I used Marine Clean to clean and degrease and then Metal-Ready to etch and leave a zinc Phosphate coating, as seen in these three photos:

Surprise!  Under the driver's side.... nasty tar deposits left over from some old roofing material used for sound and heat insulation (I wore out my heat gun, but finally got it all up).

Now that it was clean and rust free, it was time to seal the bare metal.  Jay down at LDI got me onto to X-treme 3-in-one primer. It can be used as a high build, normal, or as a primer sealer -- which was how I wanted to treat the floor pans.  Here's a before and after shot:

Upside: floors rust free and sealed : )
Downside: broke the bolt holding down the clutch/brake/gas pedal assembly, have to figure out how to get that removed before it can be hooked up again :(
